Why renewal matters
Most countries grant a trademark for a fixed term, commonly ten years, and then ask the owner to renew it. If the date is missed, the registration can be lost, and getting the same protection back may mean starting again.
Some countries also ask for extra steps at set points, such as a statement that the mark is in use (see declaration of use). Each country has its own rules, and we work from the rules of the country concerned.

Common questions
When does my trademark need to be renewed?
Most countries grant a trademark for a fixed term, commonly ten years. The exact date, and any earlier step such as a declaration of use, depends on the country. Send us the registration number and the country and we check the register.
What happens if I miss the date?
The registration can be lost. Some countries allow late renewal for a surcharge and some do not, so please do not rely on a grace period.
Is there anything to do before year ten in the United States?
Yes. A US registration needs a declaration of use between the fifth and sixth years, and a combined declaration and renewal between the ninth and tenth years. We file both: see declaration of use. Other countries have their own rules.
Will you remind me?
Yes. We record the dates for each of your registrations and write to you well ahead of the deadline, with a quote.
What do I need to send you?
The registration number and country, the owner details as they should appear, and any change since filing, such as a new name, address or owner.
