Geographical Indications

The name of a product that owes its qualities to the place it comes from can be protected, so that only producers from that place may use it.

About this service

Cheese, wine, textiles and crafts are well-known examples. Protection is usually applied for by a group of producers, with a description of the product and of the area. Systems differ: some countries have their own register, others use collective or certification marks, and there are regional and international routes. We explain the options and prepare the filing with local partners.

What is included

  • A review of the product, the area and what links them
  • Advice on the route: a national register, a regional system, or a collective or certification mark
  • Help preparing the product specification and the supporting evidence
  • Filing and follow-up through partners in each country

How it works

  1. Tell usDescribe what you have and what you want to achieve, and in which countries.
  2. We lookA specialist studies your case, with a local partner where the work is in another country.
  3. We reportYou get our findings and a plain-language recommendation, with a written quote for the next step.
  4. You decideNothing is filed or charged without your approval. We carry out what you decide.

Protection depends on the rules of each country, and a group of producers usually has to be the applicant. We tell you early what a country asks for.
